Day 1 - Reykjavík

Reykjavík, Iceland: Sprawling Reykjavík, the nation's nerve centre and government seat, is home to half the island's population. Nestled in a bay overlooked by the majestic Mt. Esja, the city presents a vibrant sight with its concrete houses adorned with colourful red, blue, and green roofs. The capital, enriched with native and imported trees, contrasts with its almost treeless surroundings. Reykjavík’s name, originating from the Icelandic words for smoke and bay, harks back to AD 874 when Norseman Ingólfur Arnarson arrived at a bay shrouded in steam plumes from nearby hot springs. Most homes are still heated using this geothermal energy, resulting in air free of smoke—but occasionally a slight sulphur aroma in the water. Exploring Reykjavík is made convenient with a City Card available at the Tourist Information Centre, providing unlimited bus transport and entry to many city attractions.

Day 2 - Heimaey Island

Heimaey Island, Iceland: It's hard to imagine, whilst strolling through Heimaey's quaint streets of white wooden houses, that just over 40 years ago the island was devastated by a volcanic eruption. The eruption of Eldfell threatened to close off the harbour completely, but was halted by the resourceful islanders who pumped gallons of seawater onto the lava. This act preserved their valuable fishing industry. The island offers some of Iceland’s most dramatic scenery, with rugged castles of volcanic rock rising majestically from the sea.

Day 3 - Grundarfjørdur

Grundarfjørdur, Iceland: Nestled on the scenic Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Grundarfjørdur is renowned for its dramatic landscapes dominated by the striking Kirkjufell Mountain. The town offers mesmerising views and is an ideal place for admiring majestic waterfalls, picturesque fjords, and unique geological formations, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Day 4 - Akureyri

Akureyri, Iceland: Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the second largest urban area in Iceland and a vibrant hub of the region. Sheltered by the long Eyjafjörður and surrounded by mountains, the town boasts late 19th-century wooden houses that recount a rich history. The twin spires of a modern Lutheran church provide a striking focal point near the waterfront. Akureyri is framed by the pyramid-shaped Súlur and the towering peak of Kerling, offering stunning vistas and excellent outdoor activities.

Day 5 - Grímsey Island

Despite its remote location and compact size, the town is surprisingly modern, offering a good selection of cafés and fantastic restaurants ready to tantalise visitors’ taste buds. This town serves as a perfect base for exploring Iceland's rugged wilderness through skiing, hiking, and water-sports.

Day 7 - Reykjavík

Reykjavík, Iceland: Returning to Reykjavík, immerse yourself once more in its vibrant cityscape and geothermal charm. Revisit the extensive options the city offers, from soaking in naturally heated pools to exploring the myriad local museums, living up to its role as Iceland's bustling nerve centre.
