Itinerary

Day 1 - Valletta

Valletta, Malta: Malta's capital, the minicity of Valletta, boasts ornate palaces and museums protected by massive honey-coloured limestone fortifications. Wandering through narrow streets, you'll observe traditional wooden balconies that once offered homebound women a glimpse of the bustling world outside. The main entrance to the city is through the City Gate, leading onto Triq Repubblika (Republic Street), the spine and main shopping street of this grid-pattern city. A parallel street, Triq Mercante (Merchant Street), is also perfect for exploration. With pedestrian detours due to redevelopment, the compactness of Valletta makes it ideal for exploration on foot. Start your journey at the tourist information office on Merchant Street for maps and brochures.

Day 2 - Siracusa

Siracusa, Sicily, Italy: Known to English speakers as Syracuse, Siracusa is a gem of Western civilisation. Founded in 734 BC by Greek colonists, it quickly grew to rival Athens in power and splendour. It remained a bulwark of Greek civilisation, with rulers attracting renowned cultural figures, such as Aeschylus and Plato. Although conquered by the Romans two centuries later, Siracusa retains examples of its storied past, from Baroque art to ancient ruins. Explore the Parco Archeologico on the mainland or the beautiful island of Ortygia, home to a lively Baroque old town and superb seafood offerings.

Day 3 - Taormina

Taormina, Italy: The medieval, cliff-side town of Taormina remains alluring despite the influx of tourists. The view from cactus-covered cliffs of the sea and Mount Etna is breathtaking. Founded by Greeks in the 6th century BC, Taormina has enchanted many, including Goethe and D.H. Lawrence. While the main streets lined with boutiques may tire quickly, the abundant hiking paths in surrounding hills offer timeless exploration, with a trip to Castelmola being a must.

Day 4 - Otranto

Otranto, Italy: Nestled in the heel of Italy's boot, Otranto is a jewel of Puglia, showcasing the region's beauty. Facing the Adriatic Sea, its clear weather and pristine waters entice visitors. With a history as diverse as its cityscape, Otranto has been influenced by Greeks, Romans, Normans, and Spaniards. The remnants of forts and the cathedral housing martyrs' relics reflect its storied past.

Day 5 - Bari

Bari, Italy: As the capital of Apulia, Bari is a bustling coastal city with a blend of old and new. The charming Citta Vecchia with its winding, narrow streets sits between two harbours, while the southern new town is characterized by its grid-like plan since the 1930s. Known for its strategic significance, Bari offers a promenade that captures its rich influences from Normans to Spaniards.

Day 6 - Ancona

Ancona, Italy: The capital of the Marche region, Ancona attracts with its unique tactile museum for the blind and picturesque sea views perfect for a sunny day. A blend of cultural offerings and natural beauty provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation and exploration.

Once a Byzantine stronghold, Ravenna's churches and tombs boast sumptuous mosaics highlighting nature's beauty. Nearby Classe offers even further mosaic treasures to experience.

Day 8 - Venice
