Itinerary

Day 1 - Valletta

Valletta, Malta: Valletta, Malta's capital, is an engaging minicity renowned for its elaborate palaces and museums, all protected by formidable honey-coloured limestone fortifications. The narrow streets, lined with houses featuring overhanging wooden balconies, offer a glimpse into the street life, reminiscent of a past that allowed housebound women a vantage point to observe the world beyond. The city's main entrance, the City Gate, is a central hub where all bus routes culminate, leading onto Republic Street, the main artery of the city, bustling with shoppers. Parallel to it runs Merchant Street, also a delightful locale for a stroll. Valletta's compactness beckons exploration on foot, although the redevelopment of its upper section, including the construction of a new Parliament Building and an open-air performance venue, may present some pedestrian detours due to ongoing works. Before embarking on your journey along Republic Street, it is advisable to pick up maps and brochures from the tourist information office on Merchant Street.

Day 2 - Trapani

Trapani, Sicily, Italy: Nestled below Mount Erice, Trapani holds the status of the most significant town on Sicily’s west coast. On a clear day, the town offers breathtaking views extending to the Egadi Islands. The Old District of Trapani occupies a distinctive scimitar-shaped promontory edged by the sea to the north and salt marshes to the south. These salt marshes not only hold archaeological importance but have also seen revival in recent times, with their history attentively chronicled in the Museo delle Saline. Beyond the salt marshes, Trapani's nearby attractions include the picturesque hilltop town of Erice, the scenic expanses of Capo San Vito, the beautiful island of Motya, and the famed town of Marsala. For those wishing to venture further, the remarkable ancient site of Segesta or the Egadi Islands, accessible via boat or hydrofoil from Trapani Port, offer additional exploration opportunities.

Day 3 - Palermo

Palermo, Italy: Once holding the title of the intellectual capital of southern Europe, Palermo is a city that stands at the intersection of various civilisations. Positioned on a crescent-shaped bay with the backdrop of Monte Pellegrino, Palermo has been a cultural melting pot, absorbing elements from diverse civilizations around the Mediterranean. This rich amalgamation is reflected in its unique Arab-Norman identity, enriched further by Byzantine and Jewish influences, resulting in astonishing works of art. Beyond its architectural heritage, Palermo is famed for its vibrant energy, epitomised in the bustling vibrancy of Italy's most animated outdoor markets, public squares, and street bazaars. This lively atmosphere is most evident during Palermo's passeggiata, a leisurely social stroll that has become a highlight in the city's social calendar.

Day 4 - Cagliari

Cagliari, Italy: Known locally as Casteddu, Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, identified by its steep streets and splendid Italianate architecture ranges from contemporary to medieval designs. The bustling commercial centre lies adjacent to the waterfront, which boasts broad avenues and arched arcades, while the older part of the city, known simply as “Castello,” features the typically narrow streets of the hilltop citadel. A visit to the Museo Archeologico provides a great initial insight into the city. Key highlights include the Bastione di Saint Remy and one of Italy's most renowned fish markets, the Mercato di San Benedetto.

Day 5 - Mahón

Mahón, Menorca, Spain: Mahón, the capital of Menorca since 1721, boasts one of the world's largest natural deep water harbours. Its strategic significance has made it a coveted site throughout history. This charming town is replete with historical buildings, including the Arch of Saint Roc, a remnant of the encircling walls from centuries past. During the British occupation of the 18th century, it is believed that Lord Nelson stayed here, with the San Antoni Mansion housing a collection of Nelson memorabilia. While the town displays Georgian styles from its colonial past, it also offers magnificent examples of neo-Classical, Baroque, and Romanesque architecture. Visitors can explore its narrow streets, relax in generously shaded squares, or enjoy its welcoming pavement cafés. However, take note that most shops close for a siesta between 1330 and 1730.

Day 6 - Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca, Spain: North of the cathedral, known locally as La Seu, lies an intricate maze of tiny streets around Plaça Santa Eulàlia, tracing back to the city's earliest days. The fortifications built by the Moors once defended this city but now only remnants remain, with Ses Voltes being one of the few places where these massive defenses still stand. The historic torrent, a stream that used to periodically flood the city, was redirected in the 17th century, with its former path now marked by key thoroughfares like La Rambla and Passeig d'es Born. A visit to Palma isn't complete without witnessing the spectacle of the traditional evening paseo along the Born. Parking is conveniently located beneath the Parc de la Mar, from where you can embark on a stroll around the park, taking in the grandeur of the Almudaina Palace and the golden hues of the cathedral. A walk along the ramparts at Ses Voltes offers spectacular views, especially if you catch the first rays illuminating the city's skyline.

Day 7 - Tarragona

Tarragona, Spain: (Not provided with a description. Incorporating a created description.) Tarragona is a vibrant coastal city renowned for its stunning Roman architecture, blending the ancient with the modern. The city’s spectacular amphitheatre, located near the seafront, dates back to the 2nd century AD and remains a highlight for visitors, providing insights into the city's historical significance as a Roman stronghold. Tarragona's charming old town is replete with picturesque streets and charming plazas, bustling with local life and lined with cafes and artisan shops. The city's inviting beaches, along with its festive local culture, rich history, and welcoming local cuisine, make Tarragona a compelling stop on any Mediterranean itinerary.
