Ancient Jewels of the Mediterranean

Ponant's expedition, "Ancient Jewels of the Mediterranean," offers an unforgettable journey aboard Le Dumont d'Urville, spanning eight days from Valletta to Athens. This voyage intricately weaves historical splendours with picturesque landscapes across Italy, Sicily, and Greece. Beginning in the enchanting confines of Valletta, known for its honey-coloured limestone fortifications, travellers are transported to the ancient wonders of Siracusa in Sicily. Here, the remnants of Greek and Roman legacies stand testament to a vibrant past.

As the cruise continues, Taormina presents stunning vistas of Mt. Etna and a hint of medieval charm. Further along, the beauty of Gallipoli's winding lanes and the history preserved within its Baroque architecture offer a serene contrast. The expedition advances into Greece, where Galaxidi invites with its tranquil presence before guests experience the timeless allure of Hydra's cobbled streets devoid of modern traffic. The journey concludes in Athens, a city dominated by the grandeur of ancient monuments, leaving travellers with indelible memories of the marvellous Mediterranean.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Valletta

Valletta, Malta: Valletta, the capital of Malta, is a miniature city adorned with intricate palaces and museums, shielded by imposing fortifications of honey-coloured limestone. The narrow streets feature overhanging wooden balconies, originally designed to allow women at home a view of street life. The City Gate serves as the main entrance, leading to the bustling Triq Repubblika—Republic Street—famed for shopping. Running parallel is Triq Mercante, also perfect for a leisurely stroll. Valletta, compact and best explored on foot, is undergoing significant redevelopment, particularly around City Gate. A tourist information office on Merchant Street provides maps and brochures to guide your exploration.

Day 2 - Siracuse

Siracuse, Sicily, Italy: Siracusa, or Syracuse to English speakers, is a city of profound historical significance. Founded by Greek colonists from Corinth in 734 BC, it swiftly rose to rival Athens in grandeur and power, becoming the largest and wealthiest city-state in the West. Throughout history, its rulers, such as Dionysius, hosted notable Greeks, creating a rich cultural environment. Siracusa thrived until Roman conquest centuries later. Today, Siracusa boasts remarkable Baroque art and architecture, Greek and Roman ruins, and a legendary Duomo embodying the city's history. The Archaeological Zone on the mainland and Ortygia Island, connected by bridges, offer significant exploration opportunities. Though Ortygia retains its ancient charm, it is modernising to meet tourist demand. The city is designed for easy wandering, while the mainland hosts wider streets leading to ancient sites like Neapolis, alongside Tyche's archaeological museum.

Day 3 - Taormina

Taormina, Italy: Perched on a cliff, the medieval town of Taormina is a touristic haven, yet its undeniable natural beauty captivates all. The splendid view of the sea and Mt. Etna from its rugged, cactus-dotted cliffs is unparalleled, especially on clear days. Renowned since its founding by Greeks in the 6th century BC, Taormina has inspired writers like Goethe and D. H. Lawrence. While its boutique-lined streets may feel repetitive, the surrounding hills' hiking trails provide a timeless escape. Visiting Castelmola, whether on foot or by car, promises an unforgettable experience.

Day 4 - Gallipoli

Gallipoli, Italy: The ancient mariners of Greece called this "Kalè polis," meaning beautiful city, with Gallipoli’s charm being self-evident. The Old Town, with its maze-like lanes, rises from the Ionian Sea, connected to modern Gallipoli by a historic 17th-century bridge. Situated on the Salentina Peninsula, the region, known as the heel of the boot of Italy, has a rich tapestry of history with Greek, Norman, Byzantine, and Baroque influences. Gallipoli's artistic heritage shines through its significant treasures, especially within the Basilica of Sant'Agata, showcasing prominent works of Giovanni Andrea Coppola.

Day 5 - Galaxidi

Galaxidi, Greece: This picturesque coastal town in Greece is known for its charming harbour and rich maritime history. Galaxidi offers quaint narrow streets and traditional stone-built houses. The town is lined with cosy tavernas serving fresh seafood, and its close proximity to the archaeological site of Delphi makes it an ideal place for cultural exploration.

Day 6 - Hydra

Hydra, Greece: Rising majestically from the sparkling Mediterranean, Hydra offers a haven of peace and charm only an hour from Athenian hustle. Renowned for its celebrity allure, having once been home to Leonard Cohen, Hydra is characterised by its ascending streets and stark white mansions. It is an idyllic sanctuary untouched by modernity due to strict regulations against cars and new developments. Here, donkeys traverse cobbled streets while fishing boats gently sway in the harbour, encapsulating a simpler life.

Day 7 - Páros

Páros, Greece: Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Páros is celebrated for its stunning beaches, traditional villages, and vibrant nightlife. The island maintains a perfect blend of authentic Greek culture and modern attractions. The town of Parikia, the island's capital, offers historical sites including the famous Church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, alongside charming streets filled with boutiques and cafes.
